When people think about shipping, they usually think of things like the USPS and FedEx. And they aren’t wrong. Those are companies that ship a great deal of products every day, all over the world. However, there are many other different types of shipping as well. Let’s take a look at just a small selection of them.

Less Than Truckload (LTL) Shipping

Here, the item that is transported is not as large as a full trailer. LTL items can go from A to B by truck, but they can also be sent to terminals. Here, smaller trucks will pick them up and deliver them. The USPS, for instance, regularly uses LTL shipping. It is a cost effective way for companies that send a lot of products out, but not anything that is particularly large, to deliver their items. It is important that they properly plan their shipments and research the different companies, however.

Heavy Haul Trucking

This is used for those items that don’t fit in a standard sized container. They may be much too large or way too heavy for a manual operator to put things on the back of a truck. Specialized types of shipping are needed instead, which is what heavy haul trucking does. They help those people that have oddly shaped items, in other words.

Rail Shipping

The railroad no longer plays the role in transportation it once did, but it still has its benefits. Indeed, the industrial world uses it extensively in order to have their products transported across the country. They like it because it helps them to avoid congestion. Just like trucks, the rail can be used for standard and non-standard items. The only limitation is that the shipping and receiving points both have to be connected to the railroads.

Specialized Types of Shipping

There are also lots of more specialized types of services. Some would argue that the above are specialized shipping services already. However, other forms of specialization include livestock, refrigerated trucks, and even trucks that move entire homes. Some companies deal solely with highly specialized loads, including hazardous materials, for instance. It is very important to find such a company if you have something somewhat out of the ordinary to send.

You must always do your research before you decide to ship anything. Not only do you have to find a company that you can trust with your items, you also have to make sure that you meet all the relevant rules and regulations. For instance, you cannot simply send a gallon of petrol using the USPS, nor can you FedEx your friends a puppy. Make sure, therefore, that you speak to your shipping company about what you are sending first.
